The holidays are a great time of year to pause and find a word that sums up how you want to feel, or a word that is meaningful to you. Want to make that word especially personal? You can’t top having a yarn wrapped word in your own handwriting, customized in any colors you like! We like a bit of sparkle that the Kartopu Galaxy yarn gives this project, too. Here’s exactly how to accomplish this beautiful and easy craft.
Materials:
Pen or Pencil
Cardboard box
Step 1:
Take a big piece of cardboard, and sketch out the word that you want to use. You won’t be able to see anything on the cardboard once you are done, so don’t worry about how perfect your pen strokes are. It’s important that you handwrite it so that all the letters are connected, keeping it a solid piece once it is cut out. Try to keep the word balanced, and the letters all about the same size. The size of the cardboard will limit how big your word is – this example is 20 inches long, and the center letters are about 4 inches high.
Step 2:
Once you are happy with how your word looks, cut it out. You can use scissors or a craft knife – you might find it easier to cut out the center of the letters with a craft knife. If you accidentally cut through the cardboard and sever your letters, don’t worry! You can tape them back together and hide the tape with the yarn.
Step 3:
Once your word is cut out, using the Zambak and Galaxy yarns held together throughout, begin wrapping the letters. You will find it easier to wrap all along the bottom of the word first, so that you don’t have to cut the yarns while working with them.
Then, cutting lengths of the yarn (all the while holding both yarns together so that you get the thick white yarn covering the cardboard and the thin sparkly silver adding that special magic touch), wrap the yarns around the letters that require you to go through the center of the letters.
Step 4:
Weave in the ends at the back of your word using a blunt tapestry needle.
That’s it! During the holidays, it can look lovely as part of your tree or mantle display:
This craft idea is something that you can really infuse with your own taste and personality, and can have a lot of applications. Other ideas for yarn wrapped words:
- A new baby’s name for a nursery
- Your family’s surname
- A word that you find meaningful – like breathe, love, peace
- A sign for the holidays- black and orange yarn-wrapped Happy Halloween, green and red wrapped Merry Christmas, blue and silver for Happy Hannukah, etc.
Play around with it and have fun! Like this tutorial? Pin it!
